debate marks another high-stakes moment in the campaign. the romney-ryan team is hoping to hang on to its new momentum, while the obama-biden camp is trying to win it back. that left all of the pressure on the number two's today, as the hours counted down. the candidates were sounding upbeat, ahead of their face-off at centre college in danville, kentucky. vice president joe biden departed his home state of delaware today for the debate. >> i'm looking forward to it. >> woodruff: the republican vice presidential nominee, wisconsin congressman paul ryan, arrived yesterday. >> feel good about it. >> woodruff: but the public show of confidence belied the tension, as several new national polls show ryan's running mate, governor romney, with a slight lead, though within the margin of error. that made what happens on the stage tonight, even more critical. president obama called his vice president to wish him luck today, and voiced support for his man last night, in an interview on abc news. >> i think joe just needs to be joe. >> woodruff: and mitt romney played up ryan's chances, at a wednesd

in the toledo area. obviously, ohio's an important state to the romney-ryan ticket. we expect paul ryan to stick to the standard substance with the five-point plan to put the middle class back to work and also going by the performance last week of governor romney. particular has a couple of events. one here in the at least area and then we're heading off to the detroit area for an afternoon event and don't expect to see him until thursday and sets up the debate against vice president biden and the past couple of days we asked how much is he prepared to meet someone with more experience. he says he knows that vice president biden will come in aggressively and maybe particularly because of the president's performance last wednesday's event in denver and he is reading briefing books, talking about issues around the country and around the world. paul ryan knows that this is a very big week for him. perhaps the biggest of his entire political career. people need to see the american voters watching that debate on thursday and see him in the vice presidential light and probably not enough for him to be

. >>> joe biden and paul ryan are preparing for tonight's vice presidential debate. the polls show the presidential race is neck and neck. mitt romney teamed up with chris christy on the campaign trail in ohio. if romney loses ohio, he would have to win almost every other swing state to make it to the white house. the president knows that as well and spent tuesday in ohio and there criticked his performance in a radio interview, saying he had been too polite. the vice presidential debate is next. biden is an experienced debateer. >> he has been doing this 40 years. i hope to present people with a clear choice. >> ryan has been trying to down play expectations. voters believe he will do better than biden. you can watch the debate here on channel 9 at 9:00 and we will stream it on our website, wusa9.com, and follow the notion of us -- blogs of usa debaters. and we'll check the facts with our fact checking team. >>> were they lies or untruths? whatever was said by the state department following the embassy in ben gaze is not true and some tough talking members of congress want to know

ticket mitt romney and paul ryan host a rally in lancaster, ohio. and we'll have that live for you as well, starting at 5:40 p.m. eastern, also on c-span. >> can we focus on the issues and not the personalities and the mud? i think there is a need if we could take a poll here with the folks from gallup, perhaps. i think there is a real need at this point to focus on the need. >> how do you respond, how do you gentleman respond to -- >> i agree with him. >> i think in general let's talk about these, let's talk about these issues. let's talk about the programs, but in the presidency, a lot goes into it. caring goes into it. that is not particularly specific. strength goes into it in, that is not specific. standing up against aggression. that is not specific in terms of a program. this is what a president has to do. so in principle though, i'll take your point and think we ought to discuss child care or, whatever else it is. >> and you two? >> ross had his hand up. >> no hedges, if, and or buts i will take the pledge. the american people want to talk about issues and not tabloid journ

a nephew who was a marine. he did a tour in iraq and god left him, he thought for our country. and romney in mind, first off, let's get something real clear here once and for all. as far as the sequester cut goes, that is obama's being. it was congressman paul ryan thing because they were too immature to act like grown-ups and make a deal, okay? obama had nothing to do with it. it was paul ryan and the congress. selected that clear once and for all. >> host: castling. >> guest: i think one of diminished on trade issues is the question of leadership and that's we heard a lot from that romney about leadership and what kind of role is obama projecting and by extension, what leadership really seaplane as well as here at home in guiding and shaping how we use our national resources. i do think although the polls may not register that much significance to any foreign policy issue, that when it comes to the broader question of leadership, that is a part of what people are going to be casting those done. i think there's an opportunity as romney clearly identified to criticize obama as a leader. >
